Summer program Waterloo

Rosedale x University of Waterloo Summer Program

Summer program focus:

Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing

The two-week program runs from July 17 to July 28, 2023

About the summer program:

Rosedale Global High School and our partner school network share a commitment and vision to provide students with outstanding learning experiences that lead to life-changing learning outcomes.

The skyrocketing popularity of ChatGPT and other Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools has signaled the future era of “Artificial Intelligence Plus.” AI holds untapped and boundless potential, and is spreading everywhere in our lives, and across all fields—from autonomous driving to robots, healthcare, the Internet, and many more. Regardless of what programs students choose to study in the future or what industry they will select for a career, they will undoubtedly have the opportunity to access AI. Understanding the application and competency development around AI is beneficial for the future, regardless of how our student community will apply themselves in the future. By understanding and applying AI, students can better respond to new challenges, seize new opportunities, and make self-aware choices for their future. To this end, Rosedale Global High School and our partner schools will explore student competency development in the era of AI to help learners accurately position themselves for the future while meeting their personalized learning goals.

To provide Rosedale Global High School students an opportunity to learn more about transformative AI technology, Rosedale has collaborated with the University of Waterloo and Renison University College at University of Waterloo to launch a two-week online summer course titled “Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing,” that will enable students to gain knowledge from professors at top universities, learn from experts who understand the application of AI in various industries, and will provide a tactical reference point for choice of future programs. The course enables students to grasp the necessary research-based academic competencies for higher education, while fully understanding the two major cutting-edge fields of AI and quantum computing—including their application practices and effectively improving students’ overall AI competency.

Meet your instructors:

John Donohue

John Donohue is the head of Scientific Outreach at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Waterloo with a research specialty in quantum optics, ultrafast laser physics, and entanglement.

Ben MacLellan

Ben MacLellan is a Ph.D. researcher at the Institute for Quantum Computing, with a background in quantum information and photonics. His current research involves numerical methods for designing and characterizing quantum sensors and networks. Learning about entanglement in high school fully captivated him and started him down the road to studying quantum information in graduate school. In his spare time, he makes pottery.

Katie McDonnell

Katie McDonnell is a postdoctoral fellow working in the Nano-Photonics and Quantum Optics lab at the Institute for Quantum Computing. During her Ph.D. she worked on a cold atom experiment, performing quantum gates using Rydberg atoms. Her current postdoctoral work is demonstrating a quantum repeater by interfacing single photons from quantum dots with cold atoms confined inside a hollow-core photonics crystal fiber.

Nachiket Sherlekar

Nachiket Sherlekar is a doctoral candidate in the Physics Department at the University of Waterloo and is affiliated with the Institue for Quantum Computing. He is researching novel quantum emitters and is working towards building and characterizing all-electric, high-frequency single photon sources based on III-V semiconductor heterostructure materials. Outside the lab, Nachiket enjoys running, birding, and collecting records.
